Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session – Objective

In our Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session, we have a technical passing drill, focusing on speed and one touch plays. The first part is followed by small sided game in tight spaces to quickly get out of pressure. In this session, we would like to improve our passing, receiving and penetration skills by trying to build up from the back for penetration into midfield.

  • Who – 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Primarily.
  • Where – Defending half or Flank.
  • When – GK possession, winning ball back defensive half.
  • Why – Penetration midfield, keep possession under pressure.
  • What – Width outside backs, support.
  • How – Passing weight, body shape, combination.

Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session – Details and Stages

The US SOCCER curriculum its best practices is followed. This methodology consists of 4 stages within our Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session, focusing on progression throughout.

Every practice session starts with a light jog warm up and stretching. Every time there is a small break, players should look to play a small game of rondo when they are waiting on their team mates.

  • 5 minutes of light jog to activate our body muscles.
  • It is followed by 2 minutes of stretching.
  • Total: 7 minutes.

Stage I – WARM UP – Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session

  • SETUP: 3 players per group, field size is 10×10.
  • MAIN: One Touch Play with Open Body.
    • Fig 1: Players practice proper set back and play through principles. Body shape and proper weight of the pass.
    • A links with B and plays through to C. B turns and links with C.
  • PROGRESSION:
    • Fig 2: B now moves from cone to cone after linking. Proper body shape is key.
    • Note: Use the foot positioned on the outside to play ball back (in fig 2 B plays first ball with right and second ball with right. Switch directions to practice left and right.
    • Rotate B out every 2 minutes.
  • COACHING POINTS:
    • • Body position, side on
      • Quality of the pass, pace, direction, and on the pitch
      • Can we play one touch?
      • B quickly moves to other cone and gets body open for next pass
  • Total: 30-35 minutes.

Stage II – SMALL SIDED ACTIVITY – Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session

  • We implement pressure from the opponent, direction to goal and transition from attack to defense.
  • 4v4 small sided game.
  • Player position themselves facing forward as often as possible. Pass to appropriate foot. Peel off a defender (quick drop) to create space to receive the ball, etc.)
  • COACHING POINTS:
    • • Communication is key
      • Proper angles and distance of support
      • Quality of the pass
      • Timing of the run
      • Visual queues for movement
  • Total: 20-25 minutes.

Stage III – EXPANDED SMALL SIDED – Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session

  • We require a slightly bigger field with 3 groups total 5v5 all the way up to 9v9, and we have at least 1 big goal with a goalkeeper.
  • The offside rule applies.
  • Split the number of field players into 3 groups, the winner stays on the field.
  • The field is marked in thirds to provide visual queues to the players in relationship to their roles on the field.
  • Focus is on the body shape of all players when addressing the ball as well as the ability to separate from a defender with quick drop off movement and or movement behind the defender.
  • COACHING POINTS:
    • • Focus on coaching points from the day
      • Play with confidence and with energy
      • Be creative in disguising and making your runs
      • Communication
      • Look for finish on goal
  • Total: 15-25 minutes.

Stage IV – FULL GAME – Building From Back Technical One Touch Passing Session

  • Every player will be included in the full game.
  • All rules apply as during a regular league game.
  • Players try to implement the lessons learned from practice.
  • We play a full game with all players involved.
  • Total: 15-25 minutes.
  • After the game, we need to cool down by a group stretching session.
