Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session – Objective
In our Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session, we have a physical drill, focusing on speed and agility. The first part is followed by small sided game in tight spaces to quickly get out of pressure. In this session, we would like to improve our passing, receiving and penetration skills by trying to switch the point of attack and focus on transition.

- Who – 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Primarily.
- Where – Defending half or Flank.
- When – GK possession, winning ball back defensive half.
- Why – Penetration midfield, keep possession under pressure.
- What – Width outside backs, support.
- How – Passing weight, body shape, combination.
Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session – Details and Stages
The US SOCCER curriculum its best practices is our guideline.
This methodology consists of 4 stages within our Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session, focusing on progression throughout.
Every practice session starts with a light jog warm up and stretching. Every time there is a small break, players should look to play a small game of rondo when they are waiting on their team mates.
- 5 minutes of light jog to activate our body muscles.
- 2 minutes of stretching.
- Total: 7 minutes.
Stage I – WARM UP – Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session
- We split the players into 2 big groups.
- MAIN Interval Test:
- Cones are a rectangular formation.
- 35 x 35 yard rectangle.
- One side full sprint followed by 3 sides of easy recovery jog.
- Total time would be 10 minutes each round, we will do 2 rounds.
- 1+3 to 2+2 to 3+1 to a full sprint (4+4) around the rectangle.
- Rondo 1 touch for 10 minutes
- Interval 10 minutes
- Total: 30-35 minutes.
Stage II – SMALL SIDED ACTIVITY – Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session
- We implement pressure from the opponent, direction to goal and transition from attack to defense.
- This stage included small sided games up until 4v4.
- There is a progression game within the same 35×35 yard square.
- The attacking team has one more player to switch the play rapidly.
- We add an extra player on each team, to make it 3v3.
- Total: 20-25 minutes.
Stage III – EXPANDED SMALL SIDED – Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session
- We require a slightly bigger field with 3 groups total 5v5 all the way up to 9v9, and we have at least 1 big goal with a goalkeeper.
- The offside rule applies.
- Split the number of field players into 3 groups, the winner stays on the field.
- PROGRESSION: limit touches for defenders and midfielders. Ideally defenders will play two touches, and midfielders will play three touches.
- Total: 15-25 minutes.
Stage IV – FULL GAME – Transition Change Point Of Attack Physical Session
- We include every player in the full game.
- All rules apply as during a regular league game.
- Players try to implement the lessons learned from practice.
- We play a full game with all players involved.
- Total: 15-25 minutes.
- After the game, we need to cool down by a group stretching session.
